"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown."
Genesis 6:4

Many people are familiar with the Biblical stories of the Watchers and Nephilim, but there are older stories. Tales of guardian spirits - Watchers - were spun around campfires by indigenous and native peoples; wondrous tales of guardians who gifted man (and woman) with hidden knowledge that helped advance humanity in many ways. There are other stories - of ancient astronauts who came to Earth to seed new life and share advanced technologies. Some stories are entirely benevolent, but in others the Watchers can be malevolent, cruel masters. Later, Biblical scribes utilised these stories to express their fears about strangers - cultures and peoples of different races - so the Watchers rebelled and their offspring, the Nephilim, became enemies who should be divinely punished.

These stories have seeped into our collective consciousness, inspiring music, art, games, films and books. Our aim is to bring together the stories of old and new that they may aid us in journeying beyond the veils of perception.

Emergence

The Nephilim and Watcher mythos is as much part of the fabric of our world as Odin and the Aesir of Viking mythology, and have inspired countless works of art, music and books.

We feature a selection of Nephilim/Watcher inspired art along with a timeline covering the past 50+ years.

Becoming

Across the myths and legends are key themes that begin to emerge - sacrifice and creation, katabasis / anabasis, forbidden knowledge, intermediaries between worlds, and rebellion.

Exploring these themes may inspire the seeker in removing obscurations and embracing the unseen within.

40 Years of Inspiration

1984, somewhere in south London, a group of energetic and creative musicians began a movement that would propel the Watcher and Nephilim mythos forward at light speed. Their initial studio album Dawnrazor was, in their own words, “an apocalyptic fusion of Victorian underworld meets Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western”. This interweaving of horror, occult and mythology into their music is what makes Fields of the Nephilim quite special, and what endears them to writers, artists and magicians.

FoTN have been the key driving force for propelling the Nephilim story forward for the past 40 years. Inspired by their dark seminal soundscapes, many artists, ranging from black and heavy metal bands to fantasy fiction authors and video game designers, have gifted the world with visual and aural delights that helped to cement the Nephilim fully into popular consciousness. Some of these delights are included in this site, and more will be added, the list is endless and growing!

We would like to acknowledge and give thanks to Fields of the Nephilim, for taking us along on their journey into shadows, and for awakening us to the light within.
